Unit description

  This short course “Academic writing and Metacognition” develops and assesses those thinking and writing skills essential to study at a university level in an English Speaking country. There is a particular focus on critical thinking and the development of an argument in an essay, as well as information literacy (the ability to collect and evaluate information from appropriate sources). This course also introduces you to important learning strategies that enable you to engage fully in your academic studies.  
The short writing course is sequenced as follows:
  • A focus on interpreting and presenting
  • A focus on paragraph and essay
  • A focus on distinguishing fact and
  • A focus on collecting, critically evaluating and synthesizing appropriate

Academic Writing and Metacognitive

Course outline (15 sessions):
  • – Brainstorming and analyzing the question & Outlining an essay
  • – Personal opinions  & Academic position
  • – Essay questions with descriptive answers & Analytical answers
  • – Voices in academic texts
  • – Expressing your own voice in an academic writing
  • – Purpose and structure of an essay: Introduction body & Conclusion paragraph
  • – Making your argument flow
  • – Developing cohesion and coherence in your essay
